National Dental Assisting Examining Board (NDAEB) Practice Exam

The structure primarily responsible for maintaining the position of the teeth is the periodontal ligament. This ligament is a fibrous connective tissue that connects the tooth to the surrounding alveolar bone. It plays a critical role in supporting the tooth and provides cushioning during chewing and other forces placed on the teeth. The periodontal ligament also helps to maintain the position of the teeth within the dental arch by anchoring them firmly in the socket. Additionally, it is involved in the sensory response, signaling changes in forces applied to the teeth, which can trigger remodeling of the surrounding bone as needed.

The other structures mentioned, while important in their own right, do not primarily function to maintain tooth position in the same way. The alveolar ridge provides the bony support for the teeth but does not actively secure them. Dental pulp is involved in the vitality and sensory function of the tooth but has no role in positioning. Cementum covers the roots of the teeth and helps anchor them to the periodontal ligament but is not the primary structure responsible for maintaining their position.
